Japan Ministry of Health Approves Use of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPSCs) for Spinal Injuries

- The Japan Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare approves the evaluation of iPS cells in a clinical research for spinal cord injuries at Keio University in Tokyo, with expected onset in H1’2019
- The study is will be conducted enrolling 4 adults with spinal cord injuries whose sensation and bodily mobility have been completely lost, transplating 2M cells of iPS with the usage of immunosuppressant drugs to control transplant rejection
- iPSCs are adult cells genetically reprogrammed to an embryonic stem cell for expressing genes & properties of embryonic stem cell. In 2014 & 2018, RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology & Kyoto University initiated trials using iPSCs for treat eye disorder & Parkinson’s disease respectively
